Japanese traditional colors

The scenery of the Japanese archipelago changes with the seasons, such as spring, summer, autumn and winter, and shows various colors and shapes such as the sky, clouds, trees and flowers. By coming into contact with many colors and shapes in this way, the Japanese have developed a unique sense of color, and since ancient times, they have incorporated a variety of colors into their daily lives, creating a world of delicate colors. Some of Japan's representative traditional colors with names derived from nature are as follows.



Yamabuki-iro

This color refers to a bright reddish yellow like Yamabuki (Japanese rose).

*The botanical name of ‘Yamabuki’ is Kerria japonica.

Kikyo-iro
This color refers to a bluish purple like Kikyo (balloon flower).

*The botanical name of ‘Kikyo’ is Platycodon grandifloras.

Wakatake-iro

This color refers to a refreshing green with a slight yellow tint, like Wakatake (Young bamboo).

*The botanical name of ‘Take’ is Bambuseae.

Botan-iro

This color refers to a purplish red color like the petals of Botan (peony) that blooms from spring to the beginning of summer.

*The botanical name of ‘Botan’ is Paeonia suffruticosa.

Azuki-iro
This color refers to a brownish reddish purple like the color of Adzuki (adzuki beans).

The botanical name of ‘Azuki’ is Vigna angularis.

日本の伝統色について

日本列島は、春夏秋冬といった四季によってさまざまに景色が変わり、空や雲、木々や草花など、さまざまな色や形を見せてくれます。こうしてたくさんの色や形に触れることによって、日本人の色彩感覚が育まれ、古来より日々の生活の中に多彩な色合いを取り入れ、繊細な色の世界を創り上げていきました。ここでは、自然に由来する名前がついている日本の伝統色を下記にご紹介します。



山吹色(やまぶきいろ)
山吹の花のような鮮やかな赤みを帯びた黄色のことです。

桔梗色(ききょういろ)

桔梗の花のような青みを帯びた紫色のことです。
