Japanese know the state of things by sound

In Japan, there is a traditional custom to know the state of things by sound. Below are some examples.

◎Knowing the time when watermelon is ready to eat.

In the old Japanese summer, those who took up a watermelon ball and tapped it lightly to judge if it was ready to eat, often were seen. If the watermelon makes a pop sound when tapped, it means a proof and sign that it became ripe, juicy and sweet enough.

スイカ

◎Inspecting the state of the content of can.

Hammering inspectors at can factories examine the state of the can’s content by tapping its lid with a thin stick and listening to the sound that comes back. They say that the experienced can know exactly the state of can’s contents by tapping it so that hammering sound can resonates in the 2.5 kilohertz range which the human ear is most sensitive to.

缶詰

◎ Examination of tunnel walls.

The hammering examination of tunnels is a well-known means to find the concrete’s strange parts by hammering the walls inside and outside of the tunnel and by listening to the coming back sound. It is said that, by the difference in sound, the degree of lifting or peeling of the wall can be found and by the sound of hammering, even the looseness of the bolts that fix signboards and other equipments can be checked.

◎Knowing how fried food is well cooked.

It is said that professionals who make tempura and other deep-fried foods can feel the state of the ingredients put into the oil-pan by the subtle changes of the sound of oil. When the ingredients are well cooked, the popping sound of the oil changes, law or high, which is said to be very useful for grasping the finish of frying.

Difference in how the brain is used between Westerners and Japanese

Difference in recognition due to left-right differences between the brains of Westerners and Japanese

To consider the difference in how the brain is used between Westerners and Japanese does not question the superiority or inferiority of each other’s nature. By clarifying the way how each of them perceives things, that is, the "differences in perception", we can carefully explore the essential factors of differences, and as a result, I believe that we will be able to treat the words and actions of people of different cultures with respect.

Tadanobu Tsunoda, a professor emeritus at Tokyo Medical and Dental University who studied the Japanese brain, states the following in his book " The Brain of Japanese with Japanese as their mother language."

“Japanese process all concepts that come from logic, emotion, and nature with the left brain. Westerners, by contrast, process each concept separately, such as logics in the left brain and emotional and/or natural things in the right brain. Based on this, I suppose that Japanese have developed the culture and thoughts in combination of logic, emotion, and nature, while Westerners have developed the culture and thoughts with separating logic, emotion, and nature.”

Furthermore, Prof. Tsunoda makes the following analysis.

◎ Westerners:

・Language→left brain

・Music, sounds of nature→right brain

◎ Japanese:

・Language, music (Japanese musical instruments), sounds of nature→left brain

・Music (Western musical instruments)→right brain

In light of the above, when I turn my attention to the Japanese culture again, I find the following examples that Japanese musical instruments are made to express natural sounds and reverberations including noise and irregularities, rather than the well-balanced sounds and reverberations of Western instruments, that Japanese people keep bell crickets indoors and feel the season with their voices, and that Japanese people like things that make sounds with natural fluctuations like wind chimes. I think these are hints about how Japanese people use their brains and perceive things.

On this blog, I wrote the following articles:

Comparison of auditory dominancepatterns between Westerners and Japanese

Consideration of auditory dominancepatterns between Westerners and Japanese

Now, what kind of “natural sounds” do Japanese people respond to in the same left brain as they do with language? Akikazu Nakamura, a Shakuhachi player, mentions the following sounds in his 2010 book, Harmonic Tone:A Cultural Note of Sound, Language and Body”.

<Natural sounds>

Natural sounds are organic sounds with a certain degree of randomness and fluctuation.

◎Organic sounds emitted by the natural world

・Sounds mixed with a certain amount of non-integer harmonic tones

◎Organic sounds emitted by people

・Sounds mixed with a certain amount of non-integer harmonic tones

◎Sounds with fluctuating pitch

◎Sounds that are slightly out of harmony

Furthermore, Mr. Nakamura states in his book, “Japanese people perceive sounds which contain non-integer harmonic tones in the left brain, whereas they perceive integer harmonic tones in the right brain.”

Consideration of auditory dominance patterns between Westerners and Japanese

Westerners respond to consonants in the left brain and vowels in the right brain.

In case of Westerners, they respond to syllables containing consonants in the left brain. In other words, when they hear language or similar sounds, they respond them in the left brain, and every other sound in the right brain. What we should like to note here, is that Westerners respond to vowels and sustained vowels in the right brain. When we think about Western languages, they are made up of syllables with lots of consonants. For this reason, in the case of Westerners, it is understood that vowels and durative vowels alone are not recognized as language.

Japanese people respond to natural sounds in the left brain, and artificial sounds in the right brain.

In the case of Japanese people, they respond to Western musical instrument sounds, mechanical sounds, and noise in the right brain, and every other sound in the left brain.

A. Pretty turbid sounds(These sounds are treated in the right brain.)

・The sound of airplane engine

・The noise of the hustle and bustle of the city

・The noise of construction site

・The sound of train and crossing signal

B.   Inorganic sounds with no turbidity (These sounds are treated in the right brain.)

・The electronic sound to inform the time signal

・The sound of noise-cut electronic instrument (synthesizers, etc.)

Although A’s “Pretty turbid sounds” and B’s “Sounds with no turbidity", seem completely unrelated, they are common in the sense that they are "artificial sounds" that do not exist in the natural world. In summary, the Japanese people respond to artificial sounds in the right brain, and natural sounds in the left brain.

About the “sounds in the natural world” that Japanese people respond to in left brain, I would like to consider specifically in another text.

Comparison of auditory dominance patterns between Westerners and Japanese

About the human brain, it is generally said that the left brain takes charge of language and the right brain recognizes music and space, etc. However, it was clarified that, between Japanese and Westerners, the parts of brain that responds differs depending on the type of sound. About this auditory dominance patterns between Westerners and Japanese, I would like to cite below the theory of book, “The Japanese Brain” published in 1978 by Tadanobu Tsunoda, a professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

Comparison of auditory dominance patterns in Westerners

Westerners respond to syllables containing consonants in the left brain. When they hear language or similar sounds, their left brain responds to them, and the right brain responds to every other sound. Examples of sounds that respond to the right brain include Western musical instruments, human emotional sounds (crying, laughing, lamenting, spoiling, etc.), durative vowels, animal cries, natural sounds and noises, etc. Even when listening to traditional Japanese instruments, the right brain responds to them. Concisely to say, in the case of Westerners, language is treated in the left brain, and every other sound is treated in the right brain.

―Syllables including consonant (CV (Consonant+Vowel), CVC)

[Right hemisphere (brain)]

―Western musical instrument sounds

―Mechanical sounds

―Vowels, durative vowels

―Humming

―Human emotional sounds (crying, laughing, moaning, lamenting, sweetening, etc.)

―Animal’s Crying (animal’s crying, bird’s songs, insects’ chirping, etc.)

―Natural sounds (sounds of stream, rain, wind, waves, etc.)

―Japanese musical instrument sounds

When Japanese people hear human’s emotional sounds (crying, laughing, lamenting, spoiling, etc.) and the sounds of traditional Japanese musical instruments, it is the left brain that responds to them. In other words, they are treated like language in the left brain. What is understood based on this, is that Japanese people respond to all sounds in the natural world, even if they are language or sounds of Japanese musical instruments, in the left brain, and artificial sounds in the right brain. This seems in contrast to Westerners very much.

On the positive effects of high-frequency sound on humans

The upper limit of the human audible frequency band is thought to be 20,000 Hz, and sound waves with frequencies higher than that, have not been regarded as “sound” for a long time because they cannot be heard by the human ear. However, it has been made clear in recent years that such high-frequency sounds are transmitted from the skin to the brain.

Akikazu Nakamura, a composer and shakuhachi (bamboo clarinet) player, states the following in his book “Harmonic Tone:A cultural Note of Sound, Language and Body” (see pp.32-34).

“Sounds above 20,000 Hz, or high-frequency sounds, are transmitted through the skin to the brain. Then, that sound increases blood flow in the thalamus and activates the fundamental brain(the diencephalon and mesencephalon). From this fact, we could infer as following about Japanese clothes, namely while today’s Western style clothes which cover the entire body, inevitably block high-frequency, Japanese clothes which have open collars, cuffs and hem, make the skin open to the atmosphere, and therefore, make it possible to take in high-frequency components into the body without cutting them off.”

Also, in his book, Mr. Nakamura mentions the following points regarding the effect of high frequency tranmitted from the skin to the brain.

◎Alpha waves increase.

NK cells (natural killer cells) increase.

 ⇒Cancer is suppressed.

◎Immunoglobulin A increases.

 ⇒Immune function-enhancing hormones increase.

Chromogranin A increases.

⇒Stress is decreased by increase of anti-stress hormones.

Adrenaline decreases.

 ⇒Fight or flight reaction decreases.

 ⇒Feeling is stabilized and relaxed.

Even if there is only high-frequency sound, there is no effect. Its positive effect appears only when both the audible band and the high-frequency component beyond the audible band are sounding together.

Sound in the human audible band, sound outside the human audible band

Audible frequency band means the frequency band of sound that humans can perceive. When converted into hertz (Hz), it is about 20Hz to 20000Hz. Sounds that are higher than the audible frequency band (sounds with a frequency of 20000 Hz or higher) are called “high frequency”, and sounds that are lower than the audible frequency band are called “low frequency”.

Voices that people usually utter in everyday conversation are between 250Hz and 4,000Hz, of which male voices around 500Hz and female voices around 1,000Hz. Human hearing is said to be most sensitive around 3,000Hz, and voices and sounds that should be noticed for sure by humans, such as baby's cry, women's scream, voice calling out to someone in the distance and warning sound of home appliance, are said to be around 2,000Hz to 4,000Hz.

“Sitar", an instrument that creates rich overtones

シタール奏者

The sitar, a string instrument that originated in northern India, uses resonant vibrating strings to emphasize certain overtones and to create new overtones on the resonant strings, creating a complex overtone structure that cannot occur in the natural world. The resonant vibrating strings here are not those that are directly produced by the player's rubbing with the bow or plucking with the fingers, but those that vibrate in resonance with such strings.

The sitar is not limited to producing integer harmonics through the action of resonant vibrating strings. The bridge of the sitar is relatively wide, and more of its surface area is in contact with the strings, allowing it to produce rich non-integer overtones.

This mechanism is similar to that of the “sawari" on the Japanese shamisen and biwa. The sitar's bridge has a sawari, which allows for the uniform derivation of non-integer overtones on every note.

The bridge of the sitar is called a “jawari" in India. The word jawari means "to touch the heart". Sawari of the shamisen and biwa and jawari of the sitar seem to have the same etymology in terms of the atmosphere of the word. The craftsman who adjusts the jawari seems to be very important in India.

Sounds and voices containing many overtones, ”Integer overtones and non-integer overtones”(2)

non-integer overtones, like integer overtonesare contained in the human voice and various musical instruments’ sounds, but they are contained more in the sounds in the natural world and sounds that are naturally voiced. Non-integer overtones are summarized as follows.

◎Frequency and waveform
 ・
The frequency is a non-integer multiple of the  fundamental tone.

 ・he waveform is irregular.

Non-integer overtones found in languages
・The vowels are mainly composed of integer overtones.
・Consonants are mainly composed of non-integer overtones.
 ※I
n Japanese, non-integer overtones are used when giving their voices expressions or emphasizing.

◎Emotional characteristics of listening to non-integer overtones

 ・Soft timbre

 ・Vague timbre

・Timbre that draws people’s attention, or make people feel intimacy and taste such as Japanese expressions.

◎Sounds containing many non-integer overtones

・Instruments>Quena, Panpipe, Percussion and so on.

・Vocalization:>Husky voices, Whisper voices, African-blooded people’s voices and so on.

・Singers>Shinichi Mori, Aki Yashiro, Keisuke Kuwata, Hikaru Utada and so on.

・Talking voice>Sanma Akashiya, Beat Takeshi, reciters and so on.

In general, the older tend to have more non-integer overtones in their voices.

◎Traditional Japanese music with many non-integer overtones

・Instruments>Shakuhachi, Shamisen, Biwa, Nohkan and so on.

・Vocalization>Katarimono(Japanese traditional narrative pieces for recitation)(Gidayu-bushi, Sekkyo-bushi, Royoku and so on.)

・Every instrument imported from China and Korea into Japan has been improved to make non-integer overtones.

Voicing non-integer overtones is said to be a little more difficult than integer overtones, because people have to relax, open their throats a little and blow more air in. This vocalization way loses a lot of energy, so this is somewhat difficult to make large voices and high overtones. This is a method of vocalization that people have to be careful of because it hurts the throat if they do excessively, but with repeated practice, people will be able to voice at a large volume.

Sounds and voices containing many overtones, ”Integer overtones and non-integer overtones”(1)

“Integer overtone” are contained in the timbre of the human voice as well as the sounds of string instruments and wind instruments. Western classical music is mainly made up of fundamental tones and low integer overtones. Integer overtones are summarized as follows.

◎Frequency and waveform
 ・The
frequency is an integral multiple of the fundamental tone.
 ・
The waveform is regular.

Integer overtones found in languages
 ・Th
e vowels are mainly composed of integer overtones.
 ・Con
sonants are mainly composed of non-integer overtones.

Emotional characteristics when listening
 ・
Hard timbre.
 ・
Clear timbre
 ・
Timbre that makes people feel the divinity, solemnity, charisma, and strength such as Western church music.

◎Sounds containing many integer overtones.
 ・
Instruments>Oboe, Charumera(Street vendor's flute), bagpipe and so on.
 ・
Vocalization>Bulgarian voices, Australian didgeridoo and so on.
 ・
Singers> Hibari Misora, Hiromi Go and so on.
 ・
Talking voice>Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, Tamori and so on.

◎Traditional Japanese music containing many integer overtones.
 ・
Instrument>Hichiriki(Japanese shawm) and so on.
 ・
Vocalization>Folk songs, Noh songs, Shomyo(Chant of Buddhist hymns), Utaimono(Japanere traditional chant pieces for recitation)(Nagauta. Jiuta and so on.)

◎ Japanese culture containing many integer overtones.
・Voices of street vendors: Bamboo pole seller’s “TAKEYA, SAODAKE”(Bamboo, poles of bamboo)” and Baked sweet potato shop’s “YAKIIMO(Baked sweet potato, Baked sweet potato)” and so on.

・Public announcement voice: Station staff ‘s “MAMONAKU-DOAGA-SIMARIMASU(The door will close soon, please be careful)” and so on.

When voicing integer overtones, people relax, pull the chin, and narrows the throat. This voicing method has little loss of energy and can doing high overtones at bigger volumes. Japanese people originally had strong voices with integer overtones, but due to the influence of Western culture, more and more people are voicing with strong fundamental tones and few ones.

Mysteries of Katakana: Usage and Timing(5)

There are three types of characters in the Japanese language: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Of these, kanji are the most numerous, and everyone understands that they are difficult to memorize. However, katakana is no less difficult, and when asked in what situations they use katakana or whether they consciously use katakana, even Japanese speakers often ask, "Oh, how did I use that?" I think that is often the case. In Japanese, katakana is often used in special phrases. The following are some examples of when katakana is used.

Role of Katakana

Japanese language is usually a combination of kanji and hiragana, but when katakana is used further, it is to make the sound of the word stand out and be pronounced more clearly than surrounding words. This allows us to show that the word is a different kind of word from others and has a special sound. Katakana is useful in that the timing can be freely adjusted depending on the person using it.

◎Use to emphasize the word itself

 Sorry I'm late!(ごめん)

 SORRY I'm late!(ゴメン)

⇒Use katakana to change the nuance.

 Don't be late!(駄目)

 You mustn't be late.(ダメ)

⇒The nuance is changed by using katakana.

Where is the item in question?(品物)

Where is the item in question?(ブツ)

⇒The meaning is changed to a special meaning by using katakana.

The recommendation of this month is the Akinatai fish set meal.(おすすめ)

The "recommendation for this month is the Akinoto fish set meal”.(オススメ)

⇒The nuance changes by using katakana.

As described above, katakana has a mysterious power. It is interesting that katakana has the mysterious power to change the impression just by using katakana.

Mysteries of Katakana: Usage and Timing(2)

There are three types of characters in the Japanese language: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Of these, kanji are the most numerous, and everyone understands that they are difficult to memorize. However, katakana is no less difficult, and when asked in what situations they use katakana or whether they consciously use katakana, even Japanese speakers often ask, "Oh, how did I use that?" I think that is often the case. In Japanese, katakana is often used in special phrases. The following are some examples of when katakana is used.

Used to express onomatopoeia and mimetic words

Katakana words are often used for onomatopoeia and mimetic words. Onomatopoeic words are words that imitate various sounds and voices that occur in the natural world, and onomatopoeic words are words that imitate various states that occur in the natural world by using linguistic sounds.

<Onomatopoeic words>

 ・It's raining like crazy. (za-za-)

 ・A dog is barking.(wann wann)

・There is a banging sound at the door.(tonn tonn)

 ・There was an explosion. (bonn)

<Mimetic words>

 ・The floor is slippery.(tsuru tsuru)

 ・The stars are twinkling.(kira kira)

・Clothes are falling to pieces.(boro boro)

・I am excited to travel abroad for the first time.(waku waku)

Mysteries of Katakana: Usage and Timing(1)

There are three types of characters in the Japanese language: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Of these, kanji are the most numerous, and everyone understands that they are difficult to memorize. However, katakana is no less difficult, and when asked in what situations they use katakana or whether they consciously use katakana, even Japanese speakers often ask, "Oh, how did I use that?" I think that is often the case. In Japanese, katakana is often used in special phrases. The following are some examples of when katakana is used.

Used to express foreign words

Foreign words that have entered the Japanese language are called Gairaigo. Chinese words from China can also be considered Gairaigo, but in Japan, they mainly refer to words from Europe and the United States. Tempura and castella were originally Dutch words, but as they are often treated like Japanese words, most katakana words are foreign words that have been interpreted as sounds and put into letters.

Another characteristic of the Japanese language is that when English words are modified into katakana words, they are represented as a single set of consonants and vowels.

For example, when the English word "test" is modified into katakana, it is interesting to note that it is expressed by breaking it down into a set of consonants and vowels, as in "te su to".

 ・pen(英語)⇒「ペン」

 ・post(英語)⇒「ポスト」

 ・soup(英語)⇒「スープ」

 ・banana(英語)⇒「バナナ」

 ・cake(英語)⇒「ケーキ」

 ・tabaco(ポルトガル語)⇒「タバコ」

 ・copo(ポルトガル語)⇒「コップ」

 ・pao(ポルトガル語)⇒「パン」

 ・juice(英語)⇒「ジュース」

 ・「シュークリーム」⇒cream puff(フランス語+英語)

 ・「ホットケーキ」⇒pancake(英語)

 ・「ドクターストップ」⇒doctor's orders

〈中国語由来〉

The Role of Non-integer Overtone in Japanese Language Putting Sounds into Words(1)

Since the Japanese processes non-integer overtone in the left brain, the Japanese language is characterized by putting many non-integer overtone sounds from the outside world into words and using these sounds effectively as linguistic expressions.

Below are some examples.

◎Words originated from sounds produced by nature

・Rain is falling in torrents, za- za-.

⇒The sound of a large amount of water flowing at once is expressed by the word “za- za-(ザーザー)".

・Rain is falling in drops, potsu potsu.

⇒The sound of water drops falling one by one is expressed by the word “potsu potsu(ポツポツ)"

・Leaves are rustling, kasa kasa.

⇒The sound of leaves rubbing against each other is expressed by the word “kasa kasa(カサカサ)"

・Thunder is rumbling, goro goro.

⇒The word “goro goro(ゴロゴロ)" is used to describe the sound of a low-pitched thunder.

・Wind is blowing, pew-pew.

⇒The sound of the wind (whistling phenomenon) is expressed by the word "pew-pew(ピューピュー)".

Shi-nn.. The empty room is completely quiet.

⇒This is a word “shi-nn(シーン)" that expresses the quietness of an empty room without a single sound.

◎Words originated from sounds made by people and/or machines

・The floor of this building is so old that it makes a creaking sound, gishi gishi.

⇒The sound of creaking wood is expressed by the word “gishi gishi(ギシギシ)".

・Vegetables are simmering in a stew, gutsu-gutsu.

⇒The sound of simmering vegetables is expressed by the word "gutsu-gutsu(グツグツ)".

・Children are running around noisily, dota bata.

⇒This is the sound of a child running around noisily, expressed by the word “dota bata(ドタバタ)".

・People are falling down, bata bata, due to an epidemic.

⇒This is an expression of the sound of a person falling ill with the word “bata bata(バタバタ)".

・People are laughing out loud, gera gera.

⇒This is a word “gera gera(ゲラゲラ)" that expresses the sound of a person laughing out loud.

・People gathered and had a lot of fun, wai wai.

⇒The word "wai wai(ワイワイ)" expresses the sound of people gathering together and making a lot of noise.

・I get nervous and feel doki doki when I stand in front of people.

⇒This is the sound of the heart beating strongly “doki doki(ドキドキ)".

◎Words used to direct the attention of people toward you

・“Shhh!" …used to silence a person who is talking.

・"Kyah!” …used to call for help when encountering danger.

Overtone structure of Japanese language(3) “Acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels and consonants”

Japanese is a language pronounced with “vowels only” or consonants + vowels. In Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, and there are no words with only consonants. Below are some specific examples of acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) due to the pronunciation of vowels and consonants.

*In Japanese, sound is equivalent to Hibiki, and Hibiki means vibration or resonance.

(1) About overtones of vowels and consonants

When we look at words in terms of overtones, consonants contain Hibiki of non-integer overtone, and vowels contain Hibiki of integer overtone. In Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, so the overtone structure changes with each sound (each syllable). This means that each sound (each syllable) is pronounced with different acoustics, which contributes to the richness of the Japanese language’s Hibiki.

(2) About the acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels

Since Japanese is a predominantly vowel-based language, the sound/Hibiki created by pronunciation of vowels is an important factor in indicating the meaning of a word. In the case of Japanese, the sounds themselves, not the meanings of the words, contain linguistic expression, so it can be said that Japanese is a language in which the sounds/Hibiki and the meanings are not separated.

Exercise

Pronounce the following sentences, being aware that the meaning is expressed by the sounds/Hibiki of the vowels.

 ※
vowels: red letters    consonants: blue letters

 ・栄子の家は、いい家です。
  e i kno i e wa, i i i e de su.
Eiko's house is a nice house.

 ・甥の家で、芋を植えました。
  o ni e de, mo u e msta.
I planted potatoes at my nephew's house.

(3)
About homonyms/homophones and the acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels

Since Japanese has five vowels (a, i, u, e, and o) and consonants and vowels are always combined, many homonyms/homophones occur. For this reason, acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in pronunciation are essential to convey the correct meaning. Pronounce the following sentences while being aware of the meaning of the words.

Exercise

Pronounce the following sentences, being aware that the meaning is expressed by the sounds/Hibiki of the vowels.

 ※Homonym/homophone words: colored letters
vowels: red letters consonants: blue letters

 ・広島で
牡蠣を食べました。
  Hi ro si ma de
kaki o ta be ma si ta.
  I ate oysters in Hiroshima.

 ・私は牡蠣フライが好きです。
Wa ta si wa kaki fu ra i ga su ki de su.
  I like fried oysters.

 ・家の庭にの木があります。
i e no ni wa ni
kaki no ki ga a ri ma su.
There is a persimmon tree in my yard.

 ・仕事の予定は下記の通りです。
si go to no yo te i wa kaki no to o ri de su.
The work schedule is as folloes.

 ・木のを渡りました。
  ki no
hasi o wa ta ri ma si ta.

  I crossed a wooden bridge.

 ・木のを切りました。
  ki no
hasi o ki ri ma si ta.
I cut the end of the tree.

 ・パスタをで食べました。
Pa su ta o hasi de ta be ma si ta.
  I ate pasta with chopsticks.

 ・袋のを折ると置きになります。
Hasi bu ku ro no hasi o o ru to hasi o ki ni na ri ma su.

You can make a chopsticks rest with folding the end of the chopsticks bag.

割り箸

(4) About acoustic structures(structures of Hibiki)of vowels and consonants

Vowels can change their acoustic structures (structures of Hibiki), whereas consonants cannot because of their close spacing of their overtones. Therefore, acoustic expression in pronunciation is mainly done with vowels. By changing the overtone structure of the sound, it is possible to give the word as a whole a rich expressive power, such as differentiating the meaning of words, emphasizing certain meanings, and expressing certain emotion.

Exercise

Pronounce the following sentences, being aware of differentiating the meaning of words, emphasizing certain meanings, and expressing certain emotion.

 ・むかしむかし、大分に老いた王がいました。
  mksmksi, o o i tni o i ta ou ga i msta.
Once upon a time, there was an old king in Oita.

 ・紅海を航海したと公開して後悔した。
  ko u ka i o ko u ka i sta to ko u ka i ste ko u ka i si ta

I regretted publishing that I sailed the Red Sea.

(5)Things that make words mean something

◎By subtly changing the overtones of vowels (changing the timbre and quality of the vowels), words are given meanings.

◎Adding tonal gradation (adding pitch and volume) to the sound gives it a sense of emotion through
 "sonds".

From the above, we can see that Japanese is a language that conveys meaning and emotion through "sonds".

oou覆う(to cover)

Words with four vowels

・iiau言い合う (to say/talk to each other)
 ・
iiie良い家 (good house)
 ・
oioi追々 (afterwards)
 ・
aioi相生 (Aioi :a place-name in Japan)

(2)Pronunciation practice on Japanese vowels

Pronounce the following Japanese words, firstly in monotone, and then with inflection, intensity and articulation. This shows how Japanese vowels contain rich overtones to convey their meanings.

* Articulation is a technique of musical performance in which the form of a sound is arranged, and a melody is classified by adding various strengths/weaknesses and expressions to the connection between notes.

 ・老いた 王 が 青い 葵 を 植える。

oita ou ga aoi aoi o ueru.
The old king plants blue hollyhocks.

 ・大分 の 甥 が 青い 魚 を 和える。

ooita no oi ga aoi uo o aeru.

A nephew in Oita dresses blue fish.

 ・家 の 上 は 硫黄 が 覆う。

ie no ue wa iou ga oou
  Sulfer covers the house.

 ・御家 を 負う 甥 を 追う。

o
ie o ou oi o ou.
Pursue the nephew who bears the responsibility of the family.

(3)Considerations of Japanese vowels

The Japanese language produces a variety of sounds by subtly changing the overtones of vowels, thereby differentiating the meanings of words and giving them expressions in accordance with feelings. Thus, Japanese is a language in which vowels are the main component, and by changing the overtones, the words as a whole can have a variety of expressive power.

Brain Stem Automatic Switch Mechanism and Japanese Language

1. Concept of Brain Switch Mechanism

I have been studying the functional differences between the left and right sides of ordinary people's brains using the most basic feedback system for communication, which is listening while speaking. As a result, I found that the functional differences between the left and right brains are automatically sorted into verbal and non-verbal tones based purely on the physical structure of the test tones, before they are divided into the cerebral cortex. If the length of the test sound is reduced to a hundredth of a second, the type of sound cannot be guessed at all, but still, the original characteristics are not lost due to the spectral structure of the sound. Therefore, it can be said that in the human brain, external stimuli are first automatically sorted by the computer of consciousness. I have named this function the "automatic brainstem switch mechanism”.

As shown in the figure below, I assume that the brain switch mechanism is centered on the brainstem before it divides into the left and right brain hemispheres, matching with the left and right auditory cortex, and then adding non-specific pathways including the midbrain reticular formation and cerebellum to the system. This mechanism is thought to play an important role in the integration between different senses and the integration of sensation and movement.

(From "The Brain of Japanese People" by Tadanobu Tsunoda)

2. Brain Dominance and Language Environment

The brains of Japanese and foreigners raised with Japanese language have the characteristic of switches that respond to the slight frequency fluctuations possessed by vowels. In contrast, the brains of non-Japanese have switch characteristics that divert the addition of a distinct FM (frequency modulation), such as the popping of consonants, to the language brain. It seems that the cause of this difference in the characteristics of the switch is not inborn, such as race or genetic information, but the language environment in which sustained vowels are used between the ages of 6 and 9, and that people who actually use that language show this Japanese-type switch.

The characteristics of the switch, which responds to slight fluctuations in the frequency of vowels, are found in Japanese and Polynesian peoples. Polynesian languages have five vowels, "aiueo," and single vowels are significant words (words with meaning), and combinations of vowels such as "aa," "ai," "au," "ae," and "ao" also have meaning. Consonants are also used in combination with vowels, which is common to the Japanese language.

◎The Japanese language is a predominantly vowel-dominant language.

・This may be the cause of the left-right difference in the brain.

◎Japanese has no combinations of consonants.

・There are few possible combinations, and the phonetic structure is simple.

・There are many homophones in Japanese, which makes the sound more complex to distinguish between them.

◎The Japanese language is always composed of consonant-vowel combinations.

・The Japanese language always consists of a combination of consonants and vowels, and one must distinguish between acoustically different ones (consonants and vowels) at any given moment.

◎Vowels have a greater acoustic range than consonants.

・Japanese language, which is vowel-centered, has a stronger acoustic component than Western languages.

Arranged Japanese mixed with foreign words(2)

A word consisting of the combination of two or more elements derived from different languages is called a hybrid word. A hybrid or mixed-breed word is a compound word derived from a morpheme of one language and a morpheme of another language. Because foreign words are often considered to be alien to the Japanese vocabulary, it is said that most of the mixed words that include foreign words are made from foreign words that have long been in common use before they were independently established as part of the Japanese language. It is also said that the percentage of mixed words in the vocabulary of the modern Japanese language is about 5%. Below are two types of hybrid words.

Urlization of foreign words (example of using a word with "ru" as a verb)

One of the characteristics of Japanese verbs is that they end in udan. For example, verbs such as “oyogu (u) / swim" and “keru (u) / kick" end with “u”. In addition, the verb “suru(to do)" can be linked to change into a verb when combined with a Chinese word.

For example, verbs can be made in the form of "word" + “suru," as in “roubai suru / wolfing" and “kaitai suru / dismantling”. Although it is possible to create verbs by simply gluing "ru" at the end of a word, these words are often born as young people's words and often disappear without spreading, or if they do spread, they are often confined to a certain neighborhood.

Let me show you a few examples.

<Japanese transitive verbs>

Sabo ru … Sabotage (French) + ru

Sizz ru ...sizzle (English) + ru

Doub ru …double  (English) + ru

Dis ru ... Disrespect (English) + ru

Gugu ru ... Google (English) + ru

Copi ru ... copy (English) + ru

As you can see, Japanese is a very flexible language, and is more prone to this kind of fusion and the creation of unique buzzwords than other languages.

Examples of Hybrid Words by Combining Foreign Words with Japanese

First of all, we would like to introduce here a one-to-one mixture of "Japanese" and "English" words. These words are often created by combining Japanese words with katakana words that were originally katakana words, and can be said to be examples of the flexibility of the Japanese vocabulary. Wago, meaning what it is, refers to vocabulary that was originally used and has been used from "Yamato Kotoba" (the Yamato language). Together with Chinese and foreign words, "Wago" emphasizes the aspect of vocabulary as a term to describe a type of vocabulary. What is also meant by " Kango" is a term borrowed in Japanese from the Chinese language of a relatively old period, a concept that is opposed to "gairaigo" (Western words), which are words borrowed from non-Kanji languages.

There are various patterns of mixed words, and we will look at some examples of these.

<Japanese + English>

 ・"Shiro asparagus" ⇒ shiro + asparagus ⇒ "Japanese" + “English” (white asparagus)

 ・"Kami app" ⇒ Kami + application ⇒ "Japanese" + “English” (amazing app)

 ・"Karaoke" ⇒ kara + orchestra ⇒ "Japanese" + “English”

 ・“Ogata bus" ⇒ Ogata + bus ⇒ "Japanese" + “English”(huge bus)

 ・"Kuchi comi" ⇒ Kuchi + communication ⇒ "Japanese" + “English”(rewiews)

 ・“Wa gom'" ⇒ Wa + gom ⇒ "Japanese" + “Dutch”(rubber band)

<Chinese + English>

・”Dan Totsu” ⇒ Dannzen Top ⇒ “Chinese” +  “English” (decisive lead)

・"Gokon" ⇒ Goudou + company ⇒ "Chinese" + “English”(two or more groups, female and male combining a party)

 ・“Yubin post" => Yubin + post => "Chinese" + “English”(mailbox)

 ・“In kyara” ⇒ In + character ⇒  “Chinese" + “English”(negative character)

 ・“Sho Ene" ⇒ sho + energy ⇒ "Chinese" + “English”(energy conservation)

 ・“Dota can" ⇒ dotanba + cancel ⇒ "Chinese" + “English”(last-minuites cancellation)

<English + Japanese>

 ・"Regi bukuro" ⇒ register + hukuro ⇒ "English" + “Japanese”(shopping plastic bag)

 ・"Conveni meshi" ⇒ convenience store + meshi ⇒ "English" + “Japanese”(convinience store food)

 ・"Smapho kubi" ⇒ smartphone + neck ⇒ "English" + “Japanese”(smartphone neck)

<English + Chinese>

 ・"Smartphone chu-doku" ⇒ smartphone + chu-doku ⇒ "English" + “ Chinese Japanese”(smartphone addiction)

・“Rehabili chu" ⇒ "rehabilitation" + “chu-" ⇒ "English" + “Chinese Japanese”(in the process of being rehabilitated)

 ・"Gas conro" ⇒ "gas" + “conro" ⇒ "English" + “Chinese Japanese”(gas stove)

 ・“Russia sei" ⇒ "Russia" + “sei" ⇒ "English" + "Chinese japanese”(Russian / agricultual products)

Japanese is a mixture of various languages.

The Japanese notation we use in our daily life lives includes not only kanji, hiragana, and katakana, but also a combination of various characters from all over the world such as Roman numerals and Arabic ones. Emoticons and Emojis are also often used among close relationships such as family and friends. Here are some examples.

Sounds and Forms of Characters in Japanese

書道

In Japanese, not only what is pronounced, but also the shape of the written characters adds an element of expression.

The appearance of the characters as these characters are written may also contain the content of what is being expressed.

Some examples are listed below.

Examples of the form of the letters that add an element of expression

Hard strokes ... have a practical atmosphere

Soft strokes ... Have a tasteful atmosphere

◎Examples in which the form of the letter has an element of expression

Every year at the end of the year, at Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, a priest writes a single kanji character on a piece of Japanese paper measuring approximately 1.5 meters in length and 1.3 meters in width, using an oversized brush to express the year's current state of affairs.

Inverted Words as Concealed Words in Japanese

The Japanese language has long had the custom of inverting certain words so that the meaning of the word is implied rather than expressed.

This is a kind of cloaking and is commonly called an inverted word. Examples are shown below.

Counter-verbalisms that imply the meaning of a word

・Chiku-ru (sniching to tell someone)

⇒A subversion of the word "kuchi" (mouth).

⇒Some say it is an abbreviation of the mimetic word "tsuk-tsuk.

・Neta-bare (Spoiler)

⇒A subjunctive of the word "seed".

⇒It means a device of a story, a detailed setting, the core of a story, an ending, etc.

・Doya-machi (flophouse)

⇒It is an abbreviation of the word "yado" (inn).

・Dafuya

 ⇒A word for "dafuya".

⇒A word for "fuda", a ticket, inverted from "fuda", a cloak word for a black market.

・Shobadai (fee of the places)

⇒A subjunctive of the word "basho" (place).

⇒It is a slang word for "place fee" in the black market.

Gasa-ire (bust)

⇒It is a subjunctive of the word "search".

⇒It means that the police enter a person's residence and seize evidence.

Dosasaburi (search)

⇒A word that means "to go to a place" or "to go to a place".

・Maiwoo

⇒A word used to refer to a food that is delicious.(umai)

In the Nihonshoki and Kujihonki, it is written that on the day of Emperor Jinmu's accession to the throne, Michinomi-no-mikoto received a secret plan and used the art of satsuka subversion (soeutasakashimagoto no jutsu) to incorporate codes in songs and words to execute his plan without being noticed by the enemy. Although we do not know exactly what kind of inverted words they used, this is said to be the oldest inverted word in Japan.

A Brief Note on: "Onomatopoeia"

The word "onomatopoeia" comes from a French word onomatopee, which further originates from an ancient Greek word onomatopoiia. It is a compound of onoma- (“name”) and -poiein (“to make”). Put together, it basically means “word-making.”

In Japanese onomatopoeia refers to a category of expressions that describe various states or movements. In other words, it is a linguistic device by which we encode the sounds we hear in the natural world.

For example, zah-zah describes the sound of pouring rain, pota-pota the sound of dripping water, wan-wan the barking of a dog, kah-kah the cawing of a crow, etc. There are other examples, such as niko-niko (“smiling”) or waku-waku (“excited”), which do not imitate the sounds but the feelings or senses.Japanese makes use of lots of these onomatopoeias.

「オノマトペ」という言葉について

「オノマトペ」という言葉は、フランス語の onomatopee(オノマトペ) からきています。さらにさかのぼると、古代ギリシャ語の onomatopoiia(オノマトポイーア)に由来します。

On-yomi and Kun-yomi(2) Different parts of your brain are activated depending on whether you read kanji or kana

Japanese has a very unique reading system as to how you read kanji (Chinese characters)On-yomi (音読み; the Chinese-borrowed reading) and kun-yomi (訓読み; the original Japanese reading).

For example,  and can be read in a variety of ways

juu-fuku, “overlapping”)…on-yomi
 chou-fuku, “overlapping”)…on-yomi
 (iku-e, “severalfold”)…kun-yomi
 omo-i, “heavy”)…kun-yomi
 ねるkasa-ne-ru, “to pile up”)…kun-yomi
 吹くshi-bu-ku, “wind blowing with rain”)…kun-yomi
 松さんshige-matsu-san, “Mr./Mrs./Ms. Shigematsu”)…kun-yomi (person’s name)

 sei-butsu, creatures”)…on-yomi
 shou-gai, lifetime”)…on-yomi

tan-jou, birth”)…on-yomi
 u-mu, to birth”)…kun-yomi
 ki-ji, cloth”)…kun-yomi
 えるha-e-ru, to grow”)…kun-yomi
 nama-mono, raw food”)…kun-yomi

According to Takeshi Yoro, a Japanese medical scientist, some patients who have suffered a mild stroke cannot read kanji and others cannot read kana. He says that the parts of brain used for reading and writing kanji, and kana are different from each other. Based on this, he proposes that the unique language system of Japanese, namely, on-yomi and kun-yomi, causes the brain to be used in a special way.

On-yomi and Kun-yomi(1) Japanese and a language from the ancient mesopotamia

Japanese has a very unique reading system as to how you read kanji(Chinese characters): On-yomi (音読み; “the Chinese-borrowed reading”) and kun-yomi (訓読み; “the original Japanese reading”). This kind of phenomenon is very rare, but not necessarily an exclusive feature of Japanese. Dr. Haruhiko Kindaichi, a Japanese renowned linguist, has pointed out that the similar system is found in Akkadian, a language once spoken in the ancient Mesopotamia. To quote his observation:

“In Japanese 春風 can be read as either harukaze or shumpu, while in Korean it is read as Chunfon, a reading borrowed from Chinese. In Japanese 春 can be read as shun or haru. […] The thing is that these two readings have nothing in common. This kind of reading system is very rare and nowhere else to be seen in today’s languages. If you go back in time, however, you find one in Asia Minor. In that region once lived a people called Sumerian before common era, who had an exceptional culture. They invented the so-called “cuneiform characters,” which were then exported to the Akkadian Empire, where the people started using them to record their national language.” (Kindaichi 1988, p.28ff.)

Akkadian is a language used in the ancient Mesopotamia, whose speakers have left us with materials written from c. 3500 BCE to the first century BCE. This language also had two different readings of a character; a reading borrowed from a foreign language, and a reading based on their native language. The former corresponds to on-yomi in Japanese, while the latter to kun-yomi.

We can infer from this that “one character, two readings” may not be exclusively unique to Japanese, but could be a universal phenomenon. It is interesting that Kindaichi refers to Akkadian as a language that has a similar feature to Japanese.

About the word “Ma”

In Japan, there is a word “Ma”. One of its meanings is “between something and something”, in other words, “interval” in English. Furthermore, this “Ma” is generally divided into two types.

What one type means is intervals in time or in space, in which, like pause in time or gap in space, nothing exists or which has no meanings. Break and blank also represent this meaning plainly.

On the other hand, another type’s “Ma” shows that, although there is actually nothing in space or time, a vast and deep universe is just there. What it expresses is a sense that some elements, including itself, invade empty time and space, making them meaningful.

Familiarity with vaguely shaped things

Today, I bought a small plate named “Mitsukumo” at a department store.

器

The plate was accompanied by the following description.

-------------------------------

Mitsukumo

The three-cloud-shaped mamezara*
is a mamezara with no front, which can be enjoyed in any direction, like a cloud that changes its shape minute by minute as it is blown by the wind, or like a full moon that hides in the clouds and changes its appearance.

*“Mamezararefers to particularly small plates of 10 cm or less among the small ones used at the dining table.Mamein Japanese meansbeanin English, and is often used to meansmall as a bean.(author's note)

-------------------------------

I was fascinated by the words in this description, “Mamezara with no front, which can be enjoyed in any direction.”And, then, I thought that the Japanese may have had such a way of enjoying from long ago.

In my opinion, a perfectly balanced shape radiates its perfection, but, for that reason, it also has an atmosphere that is somewhat unapproachable. On the other hand, an ambiguous and imbalanced shape conveys a feeling of warmth and familiarity

Looking at the clouds that change their shapes continuously as time passes, the irregular forms of waves crashing against the complex coastline, and the shapes of mountains that inspire our imagination as to how they were formed, I don’t know why, but I feel to catch a glimpse of the existence of a great creator in the wonder that they happened to become their shapes, and are not by human beings.

A mutual resonance Western and Japanese sensibilitiesーCollaboration of classical music and Nohgaku

From the spring of 2020, many events at home and abroad have been canceled due to the spread of COVID-19. Under such circumstances, in May of this year, a well-known pianist from Argentina and living in Switzerland, Martha Argerich, came to Japan for the first time in three years and toured various cities for about a month to perform the world's highest performances.

Among her performances, there was a rare program in which Argerich played together with Bunzō Otsuki, a living national treasure, who is a leading Shite (protagonist) in the Kanze school of Noh. There, Otsuki danced to J.S. Bach's ‘Partita’ Argerich played.

The other day, I found an interview article with Argerich in a newspaper. On the day, after playing with Noh performer, she said with excitement, as following.

“Noh fascinates my mind deeply. The very slow movements and the ‘Ma (time)’ of transformation from one movement to another reminded me of ‘legato’ in music.”

The article included a review on Argerich’s performance itself, too.

“Her flowing tempo was well as usual. In addition, her communication ability that, by taking a little longer ‘Ma (time)’ to connect phrases, synchronized her piano with the movement of Noh dance was very wonderful, accordingly Bach's music and Noh dance showed a mysterious fusion which transcended the actual time and space of performance.”

Here is a mutual resonance of Western and Japanese sensibilities thorough art. I think the essence of communication and its appearance are here.

Silence is also a word...

バンド

I heard an interesting story from my friend.

He is a Japanese in his fifties and has been a musical director for overseas bands. One day, a small issue came up and he was asked for his opinion as a director.

At that moment, he stopped talking and took the time for a moment to give weight to his words. However, according to him, nobody around him waited for him to begin to talk. On the contrary, they began to talk freely as they like. In Japan, silence and pauses serve as preparations for the next important word. The longer the silence is, the more everyone understand that the next words carry weight. On the other hand, in the West, it is perceived as having nothing to say.

He says that he has a lot of overseas experience and has no problems with music. However, according to him, in everyday life, Westerners do not “read the atmosphere of  the place” or do not think that “silence is also a word''. This is a cultural difference that our Japanese cannot become familiar with, he says.

Jodo-in of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple

Jōdo-in, located in the precincts of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, is the mausoleum of Saichō, the founder of the Tendai sect. To reach there, we must go down an incredibly long stone staircase.

比叡山延暦寺

On the way, an idea flitted across my mind, if this stone staircase were up
….

If the place where the founder sleeps is in a high place, we would raise our expectation that, aiming at the founder’s virtue, we can get to a higher place.

However, as I got down the long stone staircase, I began to feel something mysterious and found my self-consciousness rapidly diminishing.

When I reached Jōdo-in, only a quiet space had awaited me. All I did there was only to feel the wind, listen to the birds, and look at the swaying leaves.

Then, I was deeply convinced that Saichō's thought was just alive in this space-time of self-effacement
.

A Brief Note on: Epistemology

Epistemology is one branch of philosophy, where you study the nature of cognition, knowledge, or truth. The word epistemology is derived from the ancient Greek, epistēmē ‘knowledge’ and logos ‘discourse.’ Thus it can be referred to as “theory of knowledge.”

Epistemology seeks to find answers to questions such as: How can we know things properly? Is there anything that we cannot know? If so, what kind of thing is that? What does it mean to “know” after all? To understand the nature of “knowing,” epistemology also examines how sense, reason, memory, and other cognitive functions work.

A Brief Note on: Mentor

A Brief Note on: Mentor

The word mentor generally refers to a person who is well-experienced and thus can give good advice to others, especially younger people.

The etymology of mentor

This word has its roots in the epic poem of the ancient Greek, Odyssey. A man named no other than “Mentor” was a good friend to the hero, Odysseus. In his old age Mentor was placed in charge of the son of Odyssey, Telemachus. Mentor served as a “mentor,” and gave guidance to his friend’s son.

The name of this man came to be used as a general term mentor, with the basic meaning of “someone who gives advice.” On the other hand “someone who receives advice from a mentor” is referred to as mentee (see Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary.)

Telemachus and Mentor (1699 image)

テーレマコスとメントール

A famous case of mentor/mentee relationship

There is one famous case of mentor/mentee relationship: the relationship between one of the cofounders of Apple, late Steve Jobs, and one of the cofounders of Facebook (now renamed as Meta Platforms, Inc.), Mark Zuckerberg.

An article titled “When Facebook's founder struggled during the early days, he turned to one of his mentors, Steve Jobs, for advice” (https://www.inc.com/ilan-mochari/visit-india-creativity.html) reveals that Zuckerberg once had hit a tough patch in his early days and went to see Jobs to ask for advice.

The reply from his mentor was, as Zuckerberg recalls it, that “I should go visit this temple in India that he had gone to early in the evolution of Apple, when he was thinking about what he wanted his vision of the future to be.” As you can see here Jobs served as a mentor for Zuckerberg and provided the young man with a guidance in his own style.

Mentors in Japan

We have seen so far that mentorship was born in the ancient Greek and utilized in the West. Recently, it has started gaining popularity in Japan as well. For example, some companies in Japan today implement the so-called “mentor system,” in which employees who are more experienced serve as mentors and give advice to new recruits.

It is important to note that the mentors are expected to help new employees in various ways, not only at work, but also with their private matters or mental health when necessary. In fact, the advice from Jobs to Zuckerberg, “to visit a temple in India,” was quite a spiritual one.

In the past mentorship was a part of OJT (on the job training), but recently, the role of mentors has been prescribed more specifically. The practice of mentorship is expected to grow more widely in Japan as well.

Mentors in NLP

In NLP, you are advised to choose a mentor when you don’t have enough resources in making a choice, deciding to do or not to do something, or solving problems.

Your mentor should be someone who can give you practical and spiritual advice, such as historical figures, legendary persons in myths, your teacher, your boss, or your friends.

“When Facebook's founder struggled during the early days, he turned to one of his mentors, Steve Jobs, for advice.”

Japanese unique breathing method "Missoku"

The body that has changed through Missoku※ becomes a very sensitive “receiver'' for external elements. As a result, hearing sensitivity also increases

Different from abdominal breathing and thoracic breathing, Missoku is a breathing method unique to Japanese born from Japanese climate and living environment since old times. This is a breathing technique in which the pelvis is tilted backwards, the abdomen is inflated, and only the diaphragm is moved up and down. It has had an influence that cannot be overlooked not only on the lifestyle of the Japanese people, but also on the formation of traditional Japanese art and culture.

In the West, where people usually breathe abdominally, the main elements of music are pitch, temporal position and volume, and overtones have been considered a secondary element. In other words, there was a hierarchy of the constituent elements of music. The idea that rhythm, melody and harmony are the three elements of music, originates from this rational basis. However, as the sensitivity of the "receiver" increases by Missoku, and every element begin to be received without discrimination, the hierarchy is removed and delicate parts such as overtones begin to appear. All elements are received equally as if they were arranged on the same plane. As what is received becomes diverse, what is communicated from the recipient will naturally change as well. Similarly, the music changes. This is how Hogaku (Japanese traditional music) was born.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy that, because of this breathing method called Missoku, the importance of the “blank” part increased. When people breathe from their abdomen or chest, their bodies move and make some noise, For that reason, the "pauses" of phrases such as songs are filled with impure sounds caused by body movements. In the case of Missoku, the body does not move and make any sounds, so impurities do not appear at all. There's not even any sign of it. The difference between the two breathing methods is, like the difference between ink on newspaper and ink on white Japanese paper like snow. The beginnings, breaks and pauses of sounds become clearer. And people's consciousness is focused on that part. Furthermore, the value of each sound itself, which only shows its face among the impurities and was not identified, becomes apparent. Its appearance resembles the stones in the rock garden of Ryoanji-temple, or the islands floating in the sea of Matsushima-bay.

Next, looking at Missoku from a visual point of view, as the body stabilizes due to this breathing method, people’s eyes also become very stable. And visual sensitivity also increases. When people breathe from their abdomen or chest, their bodies move up and down, making it difficult to see the horizontal lines, but when people practice Missoku, their bodies stop moving up and down, so the horizontal lines become more visible. The horizontal line is said to represent stability, stillness etc., and the sense of tranquility increases.

If there is less body movement, the clarity of the screen will also increase. It is because it takes almost no time to focus. It's like fixing a camera on a tripod. In this case, it is possible to move from a small screen far away to a large screen nearby in an instant. I call this effect "focus in/out." On the other hand, in the case of abdominal breathing, breathing moves the body, so shifting your focus during this movement inevitably takes time. It’s like holding a camera in your hand and moving the focus. Even if the image finally comes into focus, it takes time and the screen (field of vision) often becomes blurry. However, in the case of Missoku, this "focus in/out" effect makes the viewpoint movement time extremely shorten.

In this way, Missoku makes it possible to integrate hearing and vision, time and space into stillness. This leads to the culture of “Ma (interval or pause)” in Japan.

I believe that most of Japan's traditional culture was born out of this breathing method called Missoku. When both the performer and the audience practice this breathing method, even the most subtle expressions become powerful ones for them. I think that there is no country in the world where the “culture of stillness'' has flourished and deepened in this way.

The art of conscious breathing

The art of breathing has long been practiced in Budo [Japanese martial arts] and meditation, where the specific kind of breathing, conscious breathing, has always been valued. In fact, how you breathe influences your state tremendously. From a physiological perspective, breathing under normal conditions is performed as an unconscious working of the autonomic nerve, but you can do it consciously as well.

When you breathe in, your sympathetic nervous system is stimulated and you feel energized; when you breathe out, your parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated and you relax. Breathing in consciously and slowly stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system, helping your body and mind relax. Through a prolonged process of conscious breathing, your state changes and high performance will be achieved.

The predicates specified for representational systems

1. What is “VAK Predicates”?

In the context of NLP, predicates are understood as linguistic expressions that denote visual, auditory, and kinesthetic experiences. They describe actions, states, and quality of the subject. Though the word “predicates” is often synonymous with “verbs,” in NLP it can also apply to adjectives, adverbs and nouns. Some predicates are closely related to the representational systems (visual, auditory or kinesthetic). The predicates which are linked to these senses are specifically referred to as “VAK Predicates.” (“V” stands for “visual,” “A” for “auditory,” and “K” for “kinesthetic”).

A Brief Note on: Representation

You might have heard of a word presentation. This refers to the act of “showing or giving something to somebody.” You might also know the word representation, which is a compound word, consisting of a prefix re- and presentation. To represent is “to show something in a picture, or to describe something using language.” Let’s say you have an apple in front of you. If you pick up the apple and give it to someone, you are presenting it. On the other hand, if you sketch the apple or utter the word apple, you are representing it.  Or if you can picture the apple in your head as a mental image, you are also representing it (see the section of representation in Encyclopadia Britannica). Things that exist in the material world, like apples, are stored in us through senses. To represent then is to express those stored items using language, pictures or mental images.
