Jōdo-in, located in the precincts of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, is the mausoleum of Saichō, the founder of the Tendai sect. To reach there, we must go down an incredibly long stone staircase.
On the way, an idea flitted across my mind, if this stone staircase were up….
If the place where the founder sleeps is in a high place, we would raise our expectation that, aiming at the founder’s virtue, we can get to a higher place.
However, as I got down the long stone staircase, I began to feel something mysterious and found my self-consciousness rapidly diminishing.
When I reached Jōdo-in, only a quiet space had awaited me. All I did there was only to feel the wind, listen to the birds, and look at the swaying leaves.
Then, I was deeply convinced that Saichō's thought was just alive in this space-time of self-effacement.
