日本では、お稽古ごとをするときに、おさらい(御浚い)という言葉を使います。
「お(御)」は丁寧語、「さらい(浚い)」は動詞を名詞化したもので、もともとは、池や川の底にある泥やごみをとりのぞき、水を綺麗にしたり流れをよくしたりすることを意味します。
これが転じて、お稽古ごとで師匠から教わったことを自分の中からさらさらと流れ出るようになるまで修練する意味になりました。
Osarai: the Japanese art of learning
When you learn traditional Japanese
arts such as flower arrangement or tea ceremony, or even in a classroom at
school, you will hear the teachers and students use a phrase osarai (おさらい).
O- is a
prefix you add to certain nouns when you want to sound polite, and -sarai is
a noun that derives from a verb, sarau, which basically means to make
water clean by removing mud or dust inside so that it flows smoothly.
This beautiful imagery of letting water flow smoothly has given birth to a metaphorical meaning: osarai is to practice earnestly so that you can let what your teacher or master taught you “flow” out of you smoothly.
