A Brief Note on: Representation
You might have heard of a
word presentation. This refers to the act of “showing or giving
something to somebody.” You might also know the word representation,
which is a compound word, consisting of a prefix re- and presentation.
To represent is “to show something in a picture, or to describe something using
language.” Let’s say you have an apple in front of you. If you pick up the
apple and give it to someone, you are presenting it. On the other hand, if you
sketch the apple or utter the word apple, you are representing it. Or if you can picture the apple in your head
as a mental image, you are also representing it (see the section of representation
in Encyclopadia Britannica). Things that exist in the material world,
like apples, are stored in us through senses. To represent then is to express those
stored items using language, pictures or mental images.
