¡ýWords originated from sounds made by people and/or machines

Overtone structure of Japanese language(3) ¡ÈAcoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels and consonants¡É

Japanese is a language pronounced with ¡Èvowels only¡É or ¡Èconsonants + vowels¡É. In Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, and there are no words with only consonants. Below are some specific examples of acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) due to the pronunciation of vowels and consonants.

*In Japanese, sound is equivalent to Hibiki, and Hibiki means vibration or resonance.

(1) About overtones of vowels and consonants

When we look at words in terms of overtones, consonants contain Hibiki of non-integer overtone, and vowels contain Hibiki of integer overtone. In Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, so the overtone structure changes with each sound (each syllable). This means that each sound (each syllable) is pronounced with different acoustics, which contributes to the richness of the Japanese language¡Çs Hibiki.

(2) About the acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels

Since Japanese is a predominantly vowel-based language, the sound/Hibiki created by pronunciation of vowels is an important factor in indicating the meaning of a word. In the case of Japanese, the sounds themselves, not the meanings of the words, contain linguistic expression, so it can be said that Japanese is a language in which the sounds/Hibiki and the meanings are not separated.

¡ýExercise

Pronounce the following sentences, being aware that the meaning is expressed by the sounds/Hibiki of the vowels.

¡¡¢¨

About homonyms/homophones and the acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in vowels

Since Japanese has five vowels (a, i, u, e, and o) and consonants and vowels are always combined, many homonyms/homophones occur. For this reason, acoustic variations (variations of Hibiki) in pronunciation are essential to convey the correct meaning. Pronounce the following sentences while being aware of the meaning of the words.

(4) About acoustic structures¡Êstructures of Hibiki¡Ëof vowels and consonants

Vowels can change their acoustic structures (structures of Hibiki), whereas consonants cannot because of their close spacing of their overtones. Therefore, acoustic expression in pronunciation is mainly done with vowels. By changing the overtone structure of the sound, it is possible to give the word as a whole a rich expressive power, such as differentiating the meaning of words, emphasizing certain meanings, and expressing certain emotion.

¡ýExercise

Pronounce the following sentences, being aware of differentiating the meaning of words, emphasizing certain meanings, and expressing certain emotion.

¡¡¡¡I regretted publishing that I sailed the Red Sea.

¡Ê5¡ËThings that make words mean something

¡ýBy subtly changing the overtones of vowels (changing the timbre and quality of the vowels), words are given meanings.

¡ýAdding tonal gradation (adding pitch and volume) to the sound gives it a sense of emotion through
 "sonds".

From the above, we can see that Japanese is a language that conveys meaning and emotion through "sonds".

You can find that a high degree of listening discrimination between consonants (non-integer overtone sounds) and vowels (integer overtone sounds) is performed.

(2)About overtones of vowels and consonants

In general, when we look at words in terms of overtones, consonants contain Hibiki of non-integer overtone, and vowels contain Hibiki of integer overtone. In Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, so the overtone structure changes with each sound (each syllable). This means that each sound (each syllable) is pronounced with different Hibiki, which contributes to the richness of the Japanese language¡Çs sound.

*In Japanese, sound is equivalnt to Hibiki, and Hibiki means vibration or resonance.

Japanese is a language pronounced with ¡Èvowels only¡É or ¡Èconsonants + vowels¡ÉIn Japanese, consonants are always paired with vowels, and there are no words with only consonants. Below are some specific examples of words pronounced with vowels only.

(2)Pronunciation practice on Japanese vowels

Pronounce the following Japanese words, firstly in monotone, and then with inflection, intensity and articulation. This shows how Japanese vowels contain rich overtones to convey their meanings.

* Articulation is a technique of musical performance in which the form of a sound is arranged, and a melody is classified by adding various strengths/weaknesses and expressions to the connection between notes.

(3)Considerations of Japanese vowels

The Japanese language produces a variety of sounds by subtly changing the overtones of vowels, thereby differentiating the meanings of words and giving them expressions in accordance with feelings. Thus, Japanese is a language in which vowels are the main component, and by changing the overtones, the words as a whole can have a variety of expressive power.

Brain Stem Automatic Switch Mechanism and Japanese Language

1. Concept of Brain Switch Mechanism

I have been studying the functional differences between the left and right sides of ordinary people's brains using the most basic feedback system for communication, which is listening while speaking. As a result, I found that the functional differences between the left and right brains are automatically sorted into verbal and non-verbal tones based purely on the physical structure of the test tones, before they are divided into the cerebral cortex. If the length of the test sound is reduced to a hundredth of a second, the type of sound cannot be guessed at all, but still, the original characteristics are not lost due to the spectral structure of the sound. Therefore, it can be said that in the human brain, external stimuli are first automatically sorted by the computer of consciousness. I have named this function the "automatic brainstem switch mechanism¡É.

As shown in the figure below, I assume that the brain switch mechanism is centered on the brainstem before it divides into the left and right brain hemispheres, matching with the left and right auditory cortex, and then adding non-specific pathways including the midbrain reticular formation and cerebellum to the system. This mechanism is thought to play an important role in the integration between different senses and the integration of sensation and movement.

(From "The Brain of Japanese People" by Tadanobu Tsunoda)

Ǿ´´¼«Æ°¥¹¥¤¥Ã¥Áµ¡¹½

2. Brain Dominance and Language Environment

The brains of Japanese and foreigners raised with Japanese language have the characteristic of switches that respond to the slight frequency fluctuations possessed by vowels. In contrast, the brains of non-Japanese have switch characteristics that divert the addition of a distinct FM (frequency modulation), such as the popping of consonants, to the language brain. It seems that the cause of this difference in the characteristics of the switch is not inborn, such as race or genetic information, but the language environment in which sustained vowels are used between the ages of 6 and 9, and that people who actually use that language show this Japanese-type switch.

The characteristics of the switch, which responds to slight fluctuations in the frequency of vowels, are found in Japanese and Polynesian peoples. Polynesian languages have five vowels, "aiueo," and single vowels are significant words (words with meaning), and combinations of vowels such as "aa," "ai," "au," "ae," and "ao" also have meaning. Consonants are also used in combination with vowels, which is common to the Japanese language.

¡ýThe Japanese language is a predominantly vowel-dominant language.

¡¦This may be the cause of the left-right difference in the brain.

¡ýJapanese has no combinations of consonants.

¡¦There are few possible combinations, and the phonetic structure is simple.

¡¦There are many homophones in Japanese, which makes the sound more complex to distinguish between them.

¡ýThe Japanese language is always composed of consonant-vowel combinations.

¡¦The Japanese language always consists of a combination of consonants and vowels, and one must distinguish between acoustically different ones (consonants and vowels) at any given moment.

¡ýVowels have a greater acoustic range than consonants.

¡¦Japanese language, which is vowel-centered, has a stronger acoustic component than Western languages.
